Please join us in ushering in another Winter Season with readings by Urayoán Noel from his recently published “Buzzing Hemisphere/Rumor Hemisférico” (2015 University of Arizona Press) and Baseera Khan’s narrative video tracing the migration of houseplants. With special guest, T.J. Jarrett, reading from her 2013 debut collection “Ain’t No Grave” (2013 New Issues Press).

“Urayoán Noel was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, lives in the Bronx, and teaches at NYU. As a poet, Noel is the author of Buzzing Hemisphere/Rumor Hemisférico (2015), a Library Journal Top Fall Indie Poetry selection; Hi-Density Politics (2010), a National Book Critics Circle Small Press Highlights selection; Kool Logic/La Lógica Kool (2005), an El Nuevo Día Book of the Year; and several books of poetry in Spanish, most recently EnUncIAdOr (2014). Other works include the DVD Kool Logic Sessions (2005), a collaboration with composer Monxo López; the artist’s book/performance/website The Edgemere Letters (2011), a collaboration with artist Martha Clippinger; and the critical study In Visible Movement: Nuyorican Poetry from the Sixties to Slam (2014), winner of the LASA Latina/o Studies Section Book Award. Noel has received fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Bronx Council on the Arts, and CantoMundo, and is currently completing a bilingual edition of the poems of Pablo de Rokha. Baseera Khan is a New York based artist. Her visual and written work organizes patterns of emigration and exile that are shaped by economic, social, and political changes throughout the world with a special interest in the fall of imperial power during World War II. Khan is preparing for her first solo exhibition at Participant Inc., New York City (2016) and a group show at Abrons Art Center, NYC (2016). Her past exhibitions include Arrivals, Out to See, New York City (2014), TX*13 Texas Biennial 5th Anniversary Survey Group Exhibition, TX (2014); Picturing Parallax, San Francisco State University, CA (2011), Hindu Kush, Hosfelt Gallery, San Francisco, CA (2009). She was an artist-in-residence at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Process Space, NYC (2015) and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, ME (2014). She was an Outbound Fellow to Israel/Palestine through Apexart, NYC (2015). Khan is currently part-time faculty at Parsons, The New School for Design. T.J. Jarrett is a writer and software developer in Nashville, Tennessee. Her recent work has been published or is forthcoming in Poetry, African American Review, Boston Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Callaloo, DIAGRAM, Third Coast, VQR, West Branch and others.

She has earned scholarships from Colrain Manuscript Conference and Vermont Studio Center; fellowships from Sewanee Writer’s Conference 2014 and the Summer Literary Seminars 2012 and 2014; winner of VQR’s Emily Clark Balch Prize for Poetry 2014a runner up for the 2012 Marsh Hawk Poetry Prize and 2012 New Issues Poetry Prize; and her collection The Moon Looks Down and Laughs was selected as a finalist for the 2010 Tampa Review Prize for Poetry. She has been anthologized in Language Lessons by Third Man Books and Best American Non-Required Reading 2015 from Houghton-Mifflin and others.
